Gary Hartenhoff Celebration of Life
From Jerry Hauck, owner of Monks House of Ale Repute.
Monks lost a dear and beloved friend this week, patron and artist Gary Hartenhoff died at his home. Gary’s wonderful artistic
legacy lives on, however, bringing pleasure and comfort to all who are fortunate to own one or more of his paintings.
The walls of Monks have proudly displayed dozens of pieces of Gary’s work over the years, and several permanent paintings can be seen throughout the bar. The bison above the registers on the east wall has long been a customer favorite….as have the train
engines and the landscapes.
Gary, a Sioux Falls native, spent many years as a sign painter and eventually segued into fine art about 25 years ago. He pursued his art in San Diego for several years before returning to Sioux Falls in 2003. At that time Monks was an art gallery, and I met Gary when he became one of our featured artists.
Gary never quit learning his craft and had a true passion for what he did. Even this past year, after spending three months in the hospital and losing most of the use of his right hand, Gary pushed on, teaching himself to paint with his left hand. I can’t even pick my nose with my left hand.
I was supposed to be having a beer with Gary this weekend, not having seen him for nearly three months. We won”t have that beer together but I and many others will be toasting him this Saturday, May 5, at Monks. If you knew Gary or if you just want to honor him as an artist, please join us at 4 p.m. Saturday as we pay tribute to a great friend and artist.
I’ll miss you good buddy.,,
